Students enrolled in the Semester at SDSU program can consider the SDSU certificate programs listed below.
Advanced Certificate in Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language (ESL)
The basic certificate requires 15 units to include Linguistics 420 or 520, 452 or 552, 524 or 551, 530 or 555, and 550. In addition, there is a 15-hour tutoring practicum requirement, which can be completed at the ALI.
Certificate in Environmental Studies
This program is designed to provide diverse ways for students to develop knowledge of the causes and consequences of the human impact on the environment. This professional development program offers a multi-disciplinary approach to environmental studies for teachers, natural resource managers, community activists, and others who are concerned about, and interested in the interaction of people and the environment.
Certificate in Gerontology
The Certificate Program in Gerontology is designed to broaden your knowledge in the growing area of working with an aging population.
Certificate in Women's Studies
This program is suitable for those interested in learning about the issues and concerns relevant to women's lives historically, and in the present day. SDSU's Certificate in Women's Studies is designed to provide advanced training for individuals already holding a bachelor's degree (in any field) who want to increase their understanding of women in the humanities and social sciences.

Please note that the ALI cannot guarantee participation in specific university courses. Students enroll in classes on a space-available basis.

Students successfully completing the Semester at SDSU program for two consecutive semesters are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT allows international students to work in paid or unpaid positions in the U.S. for up to one year. The ALI immigration advisor will assist you through the process.
OPT is only available to students who have taken full course loads of SDSU classes for two semesters, not those who combined intensive English courses in their program. SDSU courses should be related to the student's major.
Semester at SDSU students may also earn certificates in Business, and Hospitality and Tourism Management.
